It is not only natural and affordable, but it is also a safe and assured entry into equine care for home improvement.

Here is a list of my favorite horse uses (in no particular order):

1. Natural pest control

When horses ingest apple cider vinegar through their food on a daily basis, higher levels of thiamine (vitamin B1) are excreted through their skin. Optimal amounts of B vitamins will deter all kinds of insects, including flies and mosquitoes (see feeding tips below).

You can use apple cider vinegar for horse lice to remove eggs from your hair. Just like with humans, you have to kill the lice first, so I recommend following the steps here .

2. Improves digestion

Apple cider vinegar works to acidify the stomach to improve digestion and mineral absorption. This can help protect your horse from bacteria, parasites, waterborne diseases and even ulcers.

Research has also shown that it can slow the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream, which is beneficial for sugar sensitive ponies/horses exposed to their founder.

For this reason, using apple cider vinegar on horses with laminitis, along with proper care, can help reduce the risk of its recurrence.

5. Helps prevent bowel (bowel) stones

The alkaline environment in a horse’s digestive system can cause intentional stones to grow in a way that causes serious constipation. The acidic effect of ACV helps to perfectly dissolve or block the intestines.

This is especially useful in hard water areas or for horses that consume a lot of alfalfa hay.

Fourth hair and tail balm

Add one cup of apple cider vinegar to a bucket of water to rinse the horsetail permanently. I like to use a spray bottle for mane. This makes it incredibly soft and removes excess soap residue.

5. Hide the water while traveling

Once your horse gets used to the taste of apple cider vinegar, take it with you on your next road trip and it will be happy to drink unfamiliar water. It usually only takes a few tablespoons (more details below).

This can be incredibly useful if you are concerned about dehydration (especially if your vet is in a different situation).

Warning: Use apple cider vinegar only in plastic buckets as minerals can leach from metal or galvanized tanks.

VI Wound treatment

Spraying diluted apple cider vinegar on fungus, burns, skin infections, and other wounds is a great way to speed up healing time by helping keep bacteria and insects away.

Humans and horses have benefited from apple cider vinegar to control joint pain and osteoarthritis stiffness.

When fed daily, apple cider vinegar detoxifies, restores pH balance and increases important minerals, improving joint health.

I have seen great results with apple cider vinegar in treating minor hoof conditions such as bruises and abscesses.

I like to add 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar in 1 gallon of water for a hoof soak, or (if your horse isn’t the type to stand still) just use it undiluted in a spray bottle.

9. Weed killer

If you don’t like the idea of spraying harmful chemicals into your field (I know I don’t), apple cider vinegar is a great alternative.

For best results, spray weeds at the beginning of the growing season and whenever possible.

10. Clean blankets and pillows

Add a little apple cider vinegar to the rinse water for saddle covers, blankets, and polo towels. Helps remove soap residue, which is a good advantage for horses with delicate skin that is prone to irritation.

Bonus: It’s also great for removing odors!

✅ How to feed apple cider vinegar to horses

For maximum benefit, I recommend feeding approximately 1/4 – 1/2 cup daily apple cider vinegar.

It should be diluted 50/50 with water and add the usual feed for your horse.

An added bonus is that it will keep flies away if your horse is eating slowly.

As with all adjustments to your nutrition program, always make gradual changes and introduce them slowly, ideally over two weeks.

✅ Add apple cider vinegar to the horse’s water basin

Even if you don’t feed apple cider vinegar daily, your horse can still benefit from drinking water.

Some owners choose to add apple cider vinegar to their aquarium on a regular basis (recommended amount is 1 cup per 5-10 gallons). This can also help reduce algae growth and deter mosquitoes.

As mentioned above, use ACV only in plastic buckets as it can filter minerals from metal or galvanized tanks.
