5 Fascinating Facts About Siamese Cats

April 6th is National Siamese Cat Day, and it’s a great opportunity to celebrate these wonderful creatures. Siamese cats are known as “Meezers”, and they are among the most well-known breeds in the world.

Here are five fascinating facts about Siamese cats:

#1 Siamese cats have amazing looks

Siamese cats are famous for their elegant and distinctive appearance. Most are silver-gray and have striking blue eyes. However, these lovely felines can also be a seal, chocolate, blue, purple, or even red! Interestingly, Siamese kittens are born completely white and develop their own unique markings in the weeks following birth.

#2 Siamese cats are an ancient breed

Siamese cats originated more than 700 years ago from Thailand, which was formerly known as Siam. A Thai manuscript created between the 14th and 18th centuries called “Tamra Maew” or Cat Book Poems depicting Siamese cats. This would make it one of the oldest known cat breeds.

#3 Siamese cats are royal pets

For hundreds of years, Siamese cats have been prized by the royal families of Thailand for their distinctive, unusual and attractive appearance. In fact, members of those royal families believed that Siamese cats would receive their souls upon their death. Then the cats spend the rest of their lives living in luxury in the temples, cared for by the monks.

#4 Siamese cats are famous

Siamese cats gained widespread attention in America in the late 1870s. That’s because a US diplomat stationed in Bangkok gifted one to Lucy Hayes, the wife of President Rutherford B. Hayes. Furthermore, Siamese cats are movie stars. They’ve starred in several classics, including The Incredible Journey, The Lady and the Tramp, and That Darn Cat!

#5 Siamese cats make some pet claws

If you are looking for a cuddly friend, then a Siamese cat will surely not disappoint you. These loving and loyal cats are closely related to humans and take an interest in everything their owners do. Siamese cats love being around other cats and are excellent at getting along with children. They are incredibly talkative creatures. They will talk throughout the day and will express their needs in a loud, low-pitched voice known as a “Meezer”.

Celebrating the National Day of the Siamese Cat

Jace Shoemaker-Galloway, a cat lover, created a National Siamese Cat Day to encourage people to adopt these unique cats from animal shelters. When you step into a shelter, you’ll find a large selection of cats of all ages, sizes, colors, and temperaments. Unfortunately, not all of these precious creatures end up finding loving homes. Hundreds of thousands of shelter animals face euthanasia every year.
